Decals 1:72 for the Aichi D3A1 Val. Machines used over southern China in 1940 and an aircraft from the carrier Akagi in the spring of 1941.
Responsibility details are not available.
The combat career of the Aichi D3A dive bomber did not begin over the ocean but over the Chinese interior. It was there that the Japanese land-based air units tried the new machine out in earnest and gained the experience they put to use over Hawaii a year and a half later. This marking set concentrates on exactly that early stage.
The first item is the aircraft 9-257 of the 14th Kokutai, operating in March 1940 from the airfield at Nanning in southern China. The second machine, 3-222 of the 12th Kokutai, operated in June of the same year from the airfield at Hankow, also in southern China. The third scheme is of a different kind: Al-205 flew in April 1941 from the deck of the aircraft carrier Akagi over the Japanese islands, that is in the period of training before the war in the Pacific began.
The early D3A1 moved over China still in a light gray-green shade, without the later dark camouflage. That is exactly why this set makes an interesting counterpart to the sheets from 1942 onwards, where dark green upper surfaces already predominate.
The numbered units designated as Kokutai formed the basic organizational level of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. They were not exclusively carrier units: a large part of them operated permanently from land bases, exactly as the two Chinese machines on this sheet show.
The elements release from the backing in lukewarm water within a few tens of seconds. They are positioned on the model with a brush, the excess water is blotted away with paper and the join is left to dry thoroughly. The kit itself has to be bought separately.
