About product

The British QF 95 mm howitzer and Besa machine gun tips, scale 1:72 (MASTER)

A metal detail accessory from the Polish manufacturer MASTER, not a kit. It replaces the plastic barrel of the British 95 mm howitzer and adds the tips of the Besa machine gun barrels. The set is intended for models of the Centaur Mk.IV, Cromwell Mk.VI and Mk.VIII and Churchill Mk.V and Mk.VIII tanks in 1:72 scale.

The real subject

The 95 mm howitzer was a British close support weapon. It was not meant to punch through armor but to fire high-explosive and smoke ammunition, that is to cover the advance of friendly units and destroy field fortifications. The tank versions known as support versions therefore differ from the standard machines in exactly this short barrel of larger diameter, which is recognizable on a model at first glance. The secondary armament was the 7.92 mm Besa machine gun, the British license version of a Czechoslovak design.

Why a metal barrel

The short, thick barrel of a howitzer is a difficult part in 1:72 scale: the parting seam runs right around the circumference and while sanding you easily lose both the cylindrical shape and the correct muzzle profile. A turned part has a finished bore, is concentric and does not warp. The machine gun tips are so tiny in this scale that this is the only sensible way of getting open muzzles onto a model.

Building and painting tips

Before gluing, check that your model matches the support version with the howitzer, otherwise the barrel diameter will not fit the mantlet. Drill the opening exactly on the centerline and work from a smaller diameter to a larger one. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue, or with epoxy if there is more play. Degrease the metal and prime it with a product for metal. Accent the muzzle of the howitzer with a dark wash, which brings out the large diameter of the bore nicely. Fit the set only after the vehicle has been sprayed.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British tank support versions in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want the correct profile of a short barrel with no seam
  • Anyone interested in open muzzles even on small machine gun armament
  • Collectors who build a comparison pair with the gun version

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the vehicle kit. Glue, paints and the model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a close support weapon for high-explosive and smoke ammunition. It was not intended for fighting armored targets.

It does not. The support version has a different mantlet and barrel diameter, so the set belongs only to the types it is made for.

Drill the opening exactly on the centerline from a smaller diameter to a larger one, and before the glue sets check the direction of the barrel from above and from behind.
