About product

The StuG III Ausf. F in its early form, with the StuK 40 L/43 barrel

The set replaces the barrel of the assault gun in 1:72 scale and, according to the name, adds a muzzle brake and a gun mantlet of resin. It therefore deals with the whole front assembly of the superstructure at once, which at dimensions this small shows more than replacing the tube alone.

Why the assault gun was given a longer gun

The original vehicles carried a short 7.5 cm weapon, built to destroy fortifications and to support infantry with direct fire. Encounters with the Soviet T-34 and KV machines changed that from the ground up: from the spring of 1942 the F version received the substantially longer StuK 40 gun, 43 calibers long, and an auxiliary vehicle turned primarily into a killer of armor. These machines then made up a substantial part of the German anti-tank defense and their crews were among the most successful.

Assembly and patina

First rid the resin parts of the remains of the casting gates and wash them in lukewarm water with detergent, otherwise the primer will not hold on them. Try the mantlet dry in the face of the superstructure and only then glue it; fit the metal barrel last, so that it is not handled during the work. At the end it pays to darken the muzzle and add dust shades matching the season you are depicting.

Which builders it is for

  • anyone interested in German assault guns of 1942 and 1943
  • modelers who want a faithful mantlet and brake, not just the barrel
  • builders of small scales with a feel for fine work
  • those who build early versions that differ from later production

The item is an accessory to a kit already bought; the vehicle is not included in it.

FAQ

The name gives the barrel, the muzzle brake and the gun mantlet. The exact number of pieces is not given, so it is not stated here.

The name aims at the early machines with the gun 43 calibers long. Later vehicles were given a longer weapon, for which the manufacturer has a separate item.

Cut off the casting residues, wash the parts and let them dry thoroughly. They are bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate) and sanded wet, so that the dust does not fly into the air.

It does not. The work concerns the face of the superstructure, where the mantlet sits once the original plastic part has been removed.
