The German naval lozenge in the gray version, 1:32 scale from Old Propeller reproduces the camouflage pattern used on the floatplanes and surface machines of the imperial navy.

The sheet from Old Propeller brings the pattern of camouflage fabric that differs from the usual land camouflage. The hexagonal fields are larger and more restrained in color, and in this version they keep to a gray range. The print has the texture of fabric suggested, so once applied it does not come across as a smooth film but as taut covering. A brown-toned counterpart exists in the same line, so a choice can be made according to the particular machine.
During the First World War Imperial German naval aviation operated floatplane fighters and reconnaissance machines from coastal stations. Over the surface of the water a varied multicolored camouflage made no sense, and so prints with a cooler and less contrasting palette were used for these units. The machines watched minefields, escorted convoys and fought duels with British seaplanes, while their covering was permanently strained by salt and the weather.
The gray pattern is unobtrusive, so it stands out only on a perfectly smooth base. Before applying it, plan the fields so that their direction carries across the whole float or wing. Once dry, a very slight haze of a salt cast at the edges of the surfaces helps, hinting at the setting the machine served in. Fix it with a semi-matte varnish.
