The crews of assault guns carried loads for which there was no room in the vehicle, and improvised boxes of boards were one of the most frequent solutions. This item from the ELEFANT brand captures the second type of such a box as the machines of the Das Reich division carried it, including rendered wood texture. This is not a model of the vehicle but one piece of its field gear.
The Sturmgeschütz III came about as mobile support for the infantry on the chassis of the Panzer III tank, and in the Ausf. G form it became the most widespread version of the whole line. Early examples of this version differ from the later ones in a number of details of the superstructure, and it was precisely to them that the particular form of the gear carried was tied. The units carried boxes, tarpaulins, spare track links and jerrycans lashed to every free place, because supply in the field was not something to be taken for granted.
The rendered detail of the boards deserves a procedure of its own. A light base works well, a thin brown wash drawn over it along the grain and finally a dry brush that brings out the edges. It can be completed by suggesting securing straps and a light deposit of dust in the joints.
