A deck tractor is a low and short vehicle whose only task is to move an aircraft where it is not supposed to get under its own power. On an aircraft carrier it handles machines between the deck, the elevators and the hangar; on land bases between the apron and the shelters. The shape is subordinated to that: a low silhouette so that the vehicle passes under the fuselage and the wing, a short wheelbase for turning in a tight space and a robust hitch for the tow bar. The designation in the name refers to the shorter variant of the tractor.
On its own it is a small vehicle, but beside an aircraft model it does great service. It is used in deck and apron scenes, where it is what finally supplies the scale and the action: without ground equipment even a carefully built aircraft looks like an exhibit on a stand. In 1:72 scale it suits ordinary models of carrier and land-based aircraft of the same size.
