A masking set 1:48 tied to one particular Spitfire Mk.Ia of No. 501 Squadron RAF with the fuselage code SD-L. Besides the cockpit frames it holds the code letters and the national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set aims at a single aircraft: a Spitfire Mk.Ia with the fuselage code SD-L of No. 501 Squadron, which carried the honorary name City of Gloucester. The unit used the letters SD from September 1939, and in 1941 it operated these machines from Colerne airfield. This particular example is usually associated with one of the most successful British fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain.
The most valuable thing about a set tied to a particular machine is that the size and the spacing of the letters match photographs of the period. Sprayed codes lie directly in the paint, have no carrier film and after weathering come across as part of the surface rather than as a sheet stuck on.
With British schemes it pays to spray the lighter underside shade first, then the upper camouflage, and to leave the markings until the very end. Spray the codes thinly, because a heavy layer creates an edge that you will feel under your fingernail once the material is lifted.
Sprayed markings take more than a decal, so you can afford to sand the edges, stipple with oil paints and work with more pronounced emphasis on the panel lines. Under the final matte varnish there is moreover no glossy edge to give away a different layer thickness when the model is seen from the side.
