1:160 Cobblestone Road – Gentle Curve (N)

What it is

A section of roadway with a surface of cobblestone paving, shaped into a gentle curve, in 1:160 scale, which in railroad modeling is designated as N gauge. A curve is the part of a road that is hardest to put together from straight sections: the joins tend to show and the pattern of the paving breaks in the bend. A ready-made curved section solves that problem for you, and the scene gets a road that leads somewhere instead of a strip ending at the edge of the board.

Field of use

Cobblestone paving belongs in older built-up areas, by station buildings, in works yards and on village greens, where the surface has not changed for decades. A gentle curve suits places where a road goes around a house or turns toward a crossing; a sharp bend would look unnatural in this scale. The section can be joined to straight runs of the same paving and to sidewalks with curbs, which the manufacturer makes as separate items.

How to work with the accessory

• Lay the route out dry and only then shorten the sections to size.
• Lead the cuts along the joints between the stones; a stone cut through in the middle of an area shows.
• Level the base and rid it of dust, or the edge of the roadway will stand off.
• Choose the glue according to the material of the section and the base on which you are building the scene.
• In color the paving is brought to life by a dark thinned shade worked into the joints and a light pass with a dry brush.
