About product

The F-4B Phantom II in 1:72 scale – the New Ware masking set in the Expert version

The set contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks of kabuki paper and serves as an accessory to the plastic kit it is designated for. The model is not in the package. At New Ware, the Expert version is the more extensive variant of the same set than the basic one. The exact parts list is not stated here.

The real subject

The F-4B was the version of the two-seat twin-engine Phantom II carrier fighter for the US Navy and the US Marine Corps; it entered service at the start of the 1960s. The design grew out of a requirement for a heavy fighter able to carry a radar with a large antenna and missile armament, which is why it had two crew stations and a bulky fuselage. The upswept outer wing panels and the anhedral tailplane are unmistakable. The cockpit with its pair of separate canopies is small at 1:72 and the frames are narrow, so this is exactly where masking by hand with tape often fails.

How to use the masks

Split the work up: mask both canopies separately first, off the model, on a clean surface. A pair of flat-tipped tweezers and a lightly moistened scalpel point, on which the mask holds while it is carried, make handling the tiny parts easier. Once a mask is down, press the edges in and check them against the light; every lifted edge turns into a blurred transition after spraying. For camouflage with a hard demarcation, spray in thin coats straight from above; for soft demarcations, from a greater distance and at lower pressure. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried. If you clear coat the model before removing them, expect the coat to bind the paint to the mask, which makes the edge harder to pull away.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of carrier fighters in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want sharp frames even on a small canopy
  • Those building the model with both canopies open
  • Modelers for whom cutting tape by hand at small scale does not work out

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, which it does not contain. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set, an accessory to a plastic kit that has to be bought separately.

The F-4B is the early carrier version for the US Navy and the US Marine Corps. Later versions differ in equipment, engines and airframe details.

At New Ware, Expert is the more extensive variant of the same set. The exact parts list is not stated here.

Kabuki paper is designed for that. Even so, do not leave it on the model longer than necessary and keep the model out of the sun while it is masked.
