German national crosses are among the most demanding elements that can be put on a model. They have completely straight edges, sharp corners and a strong color contrast, so every waver or seepage of paint is visible at first glance. On a biplane they lie partly on fabric with a regular rib structure as well, and that is exactly where decal film most often lifts at the edge and begins to shine.
This set deals with the crosses on their own, separately from the rest of the markings. The manufacturer has divided its sets this way for a long time: for a number of types it issues a separate sheet with the insignia and a separate sheet with the codes and emblems, so that the modeler buys exactly the part needed for the chosen scheme.
The crosses are usually sprayed in two steps, because they consist of a light outline and a darker core. First the light paint is applied over the whole area of the insignia, and once it is dry a smaller piece of film is laid on and the dark part is sprayed in. That produces an insignia with absolutely straight transitions, which cannot be achieved with a decal.
Think the layout of all the insignia through before painting and mark them out lightly. The symmetry of the wing insignia about the axis of the fuselage is the first thing a viewer notices on a finished model, and putting it right afterwards means spraying the whole surface again.
The package holds cut films for 1:32 only. The aircraft and the paints are bought separately and the mask is removed after spraying. Count on a single-use material: if you are building several machines of the same type, you will need several sets as well.
