Top-grade kabuki masks for the Polish RWD-13 touring aircraft at 1:72. The templates are cut for the kit from the brand RS Models.

The RWD-13 came out of a Polish design workshop whose abbreviation is made up of the first letters of the surnames of three designers, and it first flew at the start of 1935. It was a cabin high-wing monoplane for a pilot and two passengers, with a welded steel fuselage covered in fabric and a wooden wing. An engine of about one hundred thirty horsepower was enough, because the machine was exceptionally light and could lift off from a short grass strip.
Besides domestic civil service it reached Spain, Romania, Estonia, Brazil and the Middle East, it flew in an air ambulance configuration with a hinged side panel for a stretcher, and a number of examples ended up abroad after 1939. A small production run and many different color schemes make it a rewarding subject, one that does not repeat itself in a display case.
At this scale the whole cabin structure is only a few centimeters long and its frames are thinner than a millimeter. Cutting tape by hand to a shape like that means working with a magnifier, and even then the edge of the paint usually frays. Pre-cut film does away with that work and holds the line along the whole length of a frame. Before applying it, wash the clear part, let it dry completely and do not touch it with bare fingers: grease from your skin is the most common reason a mask lifts of its own accord after an hour and the finish bleeds underneath.
1:72 forgives less than it would seem. Every extra drop of finish shows on a palm-sized model like a lump, so it pays to thin the paint more than at larger scales and to lay on a longer series of thin coats instead. Once the templates are off, check the frames against the light; a small overrun can be scraped away with a toothpick while the finish is still soft.
