A masking foam insert for the landing gear bays of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XII in 1:48 scale, intended for Airfix kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
A bay in the wing is one of those places where the work shows most on a model and which is at the same time the hardest to put right. The inside is painted differently from the outside, it tends to carry dense detail of ribs and pipe runs, and once the paint of the top coat strays into it during spraying, getting it out without damage is hardly possible. Masking the bay off therefore belongs among the first steps of painting, not among later repairs.
The insert is made of soft foam and is seated in the bay so as to fill it all the way round. It holds by its shape, not by adhesive, so once it is taken out not a trace is left on the edges. Foam conforms to intricate corners better than tape does, and unlike a liquid mask there is no waiting for it to dry and then picking it out of the model. It is pulled out in one go, best of all before the model reaches the final assembly of the landing gear legs and doors, while access into the bay is still comfortable. The set is cut for Airfix kits with the Spitfire Mk.XII in 1:48 scale.
The Spitfire Mk.XII was the low-altitude version of the Spitfire powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, a V12. Against the older machines with the Merlin engine it has a longer and bulkier nose and it usually flew with clipped wingtips. The landing gear remained typically Spitfire, that is with a narrow track and with bays recessed into the wing.
A masking insert is supplied according to the breakdown on the packaging. The aircraft model, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
