The line for beginning builders rests on a simple promise: a box, a moment of time and a finished figure on the shelf. The parts come from the factory already in their respective colors, the dividing seams run where they show least to the eye, and the joints hold by clicking. That does away with the whole entry barrier which keeps plenty of people from ever buying a kit: glue, thinners and waiting for things to dry.
With characters it is the face and the stance that decide. The head is therefore usually dealt with separately so that it can be fitted with a slight turn, and the limbs have joint points in the shoulders, elbows and knees. Tilting the head by a few degrees and shifting the weight onto one leg is exactly what makes the difference between a mannequin and a character who is doing something.
Work over a mat with a raised edge; the small parts of hands and feet have a talent for ending up under the furniture. Level the remnants of sprue gates in two passes rather than with a single deep cut, as light-colored plastic keeps a white mark you then have to paint over. Before you click a joint home for good, try just fitting it lightly and look at the figure from a distance.
The basic assembly is the beginning, not the end. A muted wash into the folds of the clothing deepens the fabric, fine edge highlighting draws out the shape and a matte varnish unifies the surface. None of it is necessary, but the difference shows at once. It pays to start with the folds, where shadow has a natural place and a mistake is easily forgiven.
