Kabuki masks in the BASIC scope for a model of the Japanese long-range aircraft Tachikawa Ki-74-II KAI in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Japanese firm Tachikawa was given the task of building a machine that would reach the American mainland, take photographs and come back. What came of it was an elegant twin-engine monoplane with a pressurized cabin, long slender wings and a pair of supercharged radial engines. A pressurized cabin was a rarity in Japanese aviation of the day, and it was meant to make possible flight at altitudes that neither fighters nor anti-aircraft artillery could reach. The designation with the Roman numeral II and the suffix KAI belongs to the later reworked form with a modified powerplant. Only a few were built by the end of the war and they practically never saw combat use.
They are self-adhesive masks cut from Japanese washi paper. The material is thin and slightly stretchy and holds even on a curved canopy, while it can be taken off after painting without any glue residue. Compared with liquid masks there is no waiting for drying, and compared with tape there is no danger of the cabin frame coming out narrower or wider.
The version marked as BASIC covers the main masking needs of the build, that is the glazing of the cabin and the other obvious surfaces. The sister version in the same line goes into greater detail. The masks are cut for one particular kit; with parts of another origin the outlines of the frames need not match.
Japanese long-range machines of the end of the war tended to carry a dark green spine and light undersides, and on reconnaissance types overall coats in a lighter shade also appeared, meant to make them harder to pick up at great altitude. Under the mask it is therefore good to think through which shade will go on the cabin frame from the inside, because the inside tends to be different from the outside and is hard to put right once the mask is off.
