The Grumman E-2C Hawkeye is the carrier-borne airborne early warning aircraft of the US Navy. Anyone recognizes it by the rotating rotodome above the fuselage, the pair of turboprop engines and the four vertical tail surfaces. The cabin has intricate glazing with a great many frames, so masking is one of the most time-consuming jobs on a model of this machine.
The masks are cut from kabuki tape, that is from a fine paper strip with a slightly tacky layer. The tape conforms to the curves, holds for the duration of the spraying and then comes off without tearing the paint. There is no measuring out and cutting of individual panes, so the frames come out the same width all over the cabin. The set is intended for the E-2C model in 1:72 scale and for the kits of Heller and Eduard, in the basic version marked BASIC; the extent of the masked areas is given by the manufacturer in the enclosed instructions.
Wash and degrease the glazing, then stick the masks on and press the edges down with a toothpick. Spray only afterward, in several thin layers; a single heavy layer will run under and leave a step on the glass when it comes off. Lay on the shade of the frames first and only then the covering color of the fuselage, and the transition will be clean. Take the mask off with tweezers at a sharp angle shortly after it has dried. Before sticking them on, make sure which kit you are building, because the shapes of the parts differ between the two brands.
For modelers who do not want to spend an evening cutting tape on an intricate cabin, and for anyone who wants the glazing frames even. The model, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
