A book on the military service of the Vickers transports: the Viking, Valetta and Varsity types in one volume.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Viking came about shortly after the war as a quick answer to the shortage of transport aircraft: the designers drew on the experience and the parts of the Wellington bomber and added a new fuselage with a passenger cabin. The military soon derived the Valetta from it, a machine with cargo doors, a strengthened floor and equipment for dropping troops. The last of the three, the Varsity, was given a nose gear and a prominent gondola under the fuselage in which bombardiers and navigators were trained.
It is exactly that arc of development that holds the book together. It shows how one civil design gradually took over supply flights, casualty evacuation, crew training and quiet service with communications units, from the Middle East through Cyprus to the Far East. Besides the Royal Air Force it also covers users abroad and the airframes that ended their days in civil colors.
The author specializes in the postwar Royal Air Force and in period photography, and it shows in the book: the pictorial section makes up a substantial part of the volume. It is accompanied by plans drawn for the needs of builders and by side profiles with the schemes that transport and training aircraft wore in the postwar decades.
A builder will find answers here to the questions a kit usually leaves alone: differences in the shape of the tail, the placement of the windows, the design of the landing gear and changes in equipment during service. The book is written in English and is among the fuller volumes of the series.
