The head has the shape of a low dome, that is neither a pointed hemisphere nor a flat plate. That is what most rivets on riveted structures look like: they project above the surface only a little, but in the light they create a shadow of their own and give away that the joint is not smooth. It is precisely that shadow which is the first thing lost from an injection-molded part, because the mold cannot hold a crisp transition and the head is left blurred.
The 0.5 to 1.2 mm range covers both small rivets in smaller scales and bold heads on large models and in dioramas. Do not choose the size by the scale but by the subject: compare the rivet with the surrounding detail on the part and with the thickness of the plate it is to be set into. The difference between 0.5 and 0.8 mm looks slight in the hand, but on a finished model it decides whether the surface looks fine or coarse.
First level the place and mark the spacing with a fine pencil or by a strip of paper with marks drawn in advance; an irregular row of rivets is more conspicuous than a smooth surface. For a firm seating a hole is pre-drilled at the spot, the rivet is placed in it with tweezers and secured with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting, degrease the surface and run a primer over it; otherwise the paint on a smooth dome is wiped off during handling. It works well to install the rivets in small sections and let them dry before you start on the next one.
For modelers who build machinery with exposed joints, for conversions and rebuilds where the original surface disappears under abrasive paper anyway, and for building accessories into a scene. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
