On real machinery rivets hold the sheets together, and on a model they do the same for the impression of the surface. Rows of heads lead the eye along the shape, give the surface scale and catch a shade during shading. Relief suggested by the mold does this work only by half, because it is shallow and while the seams are sanded it is the first thing to disappear.
The head is flat, that is low and with no pronounced dome. Two millimeters is the largest of the dimensions commonly offered; it suits places where the joint is to be readable even from a distance: in larger scales, on armor plates, brackets and the frames of superstructures. The package holds a single size, it is not a set of various diameters, so the dimension is chosen according to the subject and the scale of the build.
Level the surface by sanding and draw the spacing out in advance or prepare a template from a strip of paper. An irregular row of heads is, after all, more conspicuous than smooth sheet metal. Carry the rivet with fine-tipped tweezers or on the moistened tip of a toothpick, seat it in a shallow drilled recess and secure it with a minute amount of cyanoacrylate glue. Try the seating dry first; a single head will tell you whether the recess is deep enough and the spacing fits. Before you let the brush have its say, wash and degrease the surface; a primer will not take on a greasy surface. Painting can also be done before gluing, as parts stuck to double-sided tape are easier to spray than ones already installed.
