About product

The coarser end of the scale

The package follows on from the finer half of the family and covers sizes from 1.3 to 2.0 mm. These are the dimensions that carry weight on a model, whether literally or visually. They appear where the structure holds something: on frames, suspension anchorages, flanges, feet and massive hangers.

Two reasons to reach for a range

The first is saving on decisions. During a build you rarely know in advance how many joint groups you will finally rebuild and how large the heads each place needs, and a range puts that question off until you are at the bench. The second reason is more interesting and concerns the final impression. When a builder has several grades at hand at once, they naturally start combining them, and the model thereby gains a hierarchy that a single size would never create.

Where the reasonable limit lies

The opposite holds too. The coarsest grades do not belong everywhere, and a massive head on a thin sheet-metal cover is distracting, because the viewer subconsciously judges what force such a joint would have to transfer. If you are not sure, compare the planned detail with the thickness of the part it is to sit on.

A practical note on the work

The heavier parts have a higher profile, and that is why pre-drilling a seat always pays off with them. The seating then holds around its whole circumference and the joint does not disappear at the first wiping of dust from a finished model.

How the sizes speak to each other

An interesting effect arises when two different grades meet side by side on one model. The eye immediately understands that the coarser joint holds something more substantial, and assigns the parts importance without anyone saying a word about it. It is precisely in this silent message that the main benefit of a range package lies, because a single size cannot carry that information.

FAQ

The more heavily dimensioned joint groups of a structure, that is frames, anchorages, flanges and feet. Fine covers are covered by the companion package of lower sizes.

Yes. A combination of several grades gives a model a hierarchy of joints the viewer will notice even without naming it.

As soon as the head visually disagrees with the thickness of the part it sits on. A massive joint on a thin cover looks out of place.

The number of pieces is not stated by the manufacturer in the available data, so it is not stated here either.
