Raised printing for the cockpit of the F-14B version for the 1:72 Academy kit. The instrument panels, the consoles and the ejection seats get color and relief in one go, with no mixing of shades and no trembling hand.
Responsibility details are not available.
The designation F-14B went to the Tomcat whose original powerplants were replaced by General Electric F110-GE-400 engines. The machines were built from the mid-1980s, at first under the name F-14A Plus, and in 1991 the plain letter B settled down. The new powerplant took added power even in a hard turn and rid the crews of the worries that had gone with the older propulsion system. The aircraft saw action over the Balkans and in the Persian Gulf, where work with guided munitions against ground targets was added to the fighter role.
First the surface the element is to go onto is leveled with a file or a sanding sponge and freed of grease. The cut-out part is dipped in lukewarm water, after a few tens of seconds it releases from the paper and is slid into place. The remaining water is drawn off with the corner of a cloth and the element is pressed down lightly so that it seats into the corners. A layer of clear resin holds the shape on its own, so once seated the part no longer tends to roll up.
A modeler who paints the same panel with a brush fights two things at once: the thickness of the hair and symmetry. Printing gets around both problems. The dials have sharp outlines, the needles and the small lettering stay legible, and the color fields on the consoles come out the same on both sides of the cockpit. Under a clear canopy an instrument also gains a mirror-like surface that is hard to imitate with a brush.
The most frequent mistake is haste. A surface that has not dried enough, or a remnant of sanding dust, makes the element stand away at the edge. The second trap is softening agents, which tend to be too aggressive for this layer. And thirdly: the shapes are based on the Academy parts, and another kit will call for adjustments.
