About product

Omask 1:72 Reggiane Re.2000 - wheel bay plugs (for the Italeri kit)

A masking set from Omask, shaped to the wheel bays of the Reggiane Re.2000 model in 1:72 scale from Italeri. The plugs are made of flexible EVA foam. It is NOT a kit: the Italeri Re.2000 model is not included in the package and you have to own it.

Watch out for the mix-up: three Italian machines for Italeri

In 1:72 Omask makes three different Italian aircraft for Italeri kits: the Re.2000, the Macchi MC.202 and the Re.2002. They are three different aircraft with differently shaped wheel bays and each plug is shaped to one particular kit, so they are not interchangeable. This set is for the Reggiane Re.2000. Do not confuse it with the Re.2002 Ariete: the Re.2000 was a pure fighter from the late 1930s, whereas the Re.2002 is a later fighter-bomber derived from a different airframe.

How it works and why it makes sense in 1:72

The wheel bay is a deep cavity that you paint first, and before you start spraying the outside of the model you have to mask it, otherwise you ruin the finished interior. The foam plug is pushed into the bay, compressed and seals the opening by itself, so it holds without glue and does not have to fit to hundredths of a millimeter the way a hard part does. Once the paint has dried you take it out and use it again. It is precisely in 1:72 that the bays are so small, deep and awkward to reach that masking with tape and cotton is the most tiresome job of all, so a shaped plug saves the most work.

The real subject

The Reggiane Re.2000 (Falco) was an Italian fighter that came about at the end of the 1930s. It was powered by an air-cooled Piaggio radial engine, which gave the machine its characteristic broad, rounded nose. The aircraft handled well, but its engine was considered troublesome and the Regia Aeronautica put it into the front line only to a limited extent: a large share of production went for export.

Usage tips

Paint the bay first and let it cure. Slip the plug in with tweezers, press it down to the outline and spray. The foam also keeps sanding dust from the surroundings out of the painted bay. Take it out only once the outer paint has dried.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of the Reggiane Re.2000 model in 1:72 from Italeri
  • For modelers who spray with an airbrush and want a clean bay
  • For collectors of Italian fighters who build several Reggiane machines side by side
  • For anyone for whom masking small bays with tape makes no sense

The package contains only the masking plugs. The model, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The Re.2000, the Re.2002 and the MC.202 are three different aircraft with differently shaped wheel bays. Each set is shaped to one particular kit and they are not interchangeable; separate sets exist for the Re.2002 and for the MC.202.

No. It is a masking accessory, a set of foam plugs for the wheel bays. You have to own the 1:72 Italeri Reggiane Re.2000 model, which is not included in the package.

Yes. EVA foam is springy, it compresses in the bay and seals it by itself. No glue is used and you can use the plug again after taking it out.

In 1:72 most of all. The bays are small, deep and awkward to reach, so masking with tape and cotton takes a long time and still leaks. A ready-made plug fills the cavity in one go.
