Supermarine Spitfire TR.9 1:48 - EXPERT kabuki masks (New Ware)

This is an extended set of masking stencils from New Ware for a model of the two-seat Spitfire TR.9 trainer in 1:48 scale. The masks are cut from thin Japanese kabuki tape and follow the framing of both canopies of the tandem cockpit exactly. Compared with the basic range, EXPERT adds masks for the inner side of the glazing, so that the framing looks faithful from the outside and from the inside alike.

What a kabuki mask is

Kabuki tape holds its shape, adheres to curved surfaces and leaves no adhesive behind when removed. Pre-cut masks do away with laborious cutting and give sharp edges to the spraying. The set usually covers the wheels and other small areas to be masked as well.

Usage tips

First spray the color of the cockpit interior, then stick the inner masks down. Degrease the clear parts, transfer the masks one at a time and press them against the edges of the framing. Apply the paint in thin coats and lift the masks off at a slight angle soon after it has dried.
