About product

A-4 Skyhawk 1:72 — metal barrels for the Colt Mk 12 cannon

A set of turned metal parts from Master intended to improve the model of the light carrier attack aircraft A-4 Skyhawk in 1:72 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory that replaces the plastic muzzles of the cannon housed in the wing roots.

Why in small scale in particular

The smaller the scale, the harder it is to produce armament detail in injection-molded plastic. In 1:72 scale the barrel of a 20 mm cannon is thinner than a pin, and in kits it is usually represented only by a short stub or a dimple. Drilling such a diameter by hand means a high risk that the bit will break off inside the part and damage the surrounding surface. Turned metal gets around this problem: the part has a finished bore, it is perfectly straight and its wall stays thin even once fitted, which is exactly what cannot be done in plastic.

The real subject

The A-4 Skyhawk is an American single-engine carrier attack aircraft with a delta wing, designed as a light and simple machine able to operate from the decks of aircraft carriers. The armament consisted of two 20 mm Colt Mk 12 cannon housed in the wing roots; the main armament was carried on external pylons. The aircraft was in service with a number of users for several decades.

Fitting and painting

Parts of this size are handled with fine-jawed tweezers and over a light-colored surface on which a dropped part can be found. The hole in the wing root is opened up with a micro drill, the part is slid in dry and fixed with a minimal drop of gel cyanoacrylate applied with a pin. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and go over it with a primer for metal. When dusting the finished model off at the end, keep a soft brush away from the barrels — a fine bristle catches on them easily and pulls them out of the hole.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of A-4 Skyhawk models in 1:72 scale
  • For modelers who do not want to risk drilling into the wing in the small scale
  • For those who build out of the box and want one prominent extra detail
  • For combining with photo-etched sets in the same scale

This is an accessory for building a model, not a standalone kit. The basic model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The work calls for tweezers and a calm hand, but the fitting is simple: open the hole up, slide the part in dry and fix it with a tiny drop of gel cyanoacrylate.

No. It is a metal accessory for the A-4 Skyhawk model in 1:72 scale; you need to have the aircraft kit itself.

Most modelers leave them in the metal tone and only degrease them. If you do paint, a primer for metal is essential, otherwise the paint will rub off during handling.
