About product

1:72 A-4M Skyhawk masking set (Dead Design)

This item is not a model of the aircraft but a masking set, that is an accessory to a plastic kit in 1:72 scale. The masks are cut to shape in advance, so painting does away with measuring out and the laborious joining of strips of crepe tape. It is at a small scale that this pays off most: the sprayed line comes out crisp even where hand-cut tape would only crumple. The extent of the set, the number of pieces and the material of the carrier are not stated here, so go by the instructions supplied.

The real subject

The A-4M was the last single-seat development version of the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk light attack aircraft. The type appeared in the mid-1950s as a small carrier-based machine with a delta wing whose span fitted the deck elevators even without a folding mechanism, which saved both weight and complexity. The M version received a more powerful engine, a taller and better glazed canopy and a dorsal fairing for avionics behind the cockpit. It is precisely the outlines of the glazing and the shape of the spine that set this version apart from the older machines of the range, so a mask cut for one version will reliably not fit another.

Masking and painting

With masking it is the order of the shades that decides. Start with the lighter tone, let it cure thoroughly and only then lay the darker one on over the mask. The other way round forces you to spray the light color in heavier coats to cover, and those coats flood the edge of the mask and smudge it. The base has to be smooth and degreased, otherwise the paint will run underneath. It works well to run a burnisher over the mask once it is stuck down and to seal the edge first with a light coat of the color already on the model, so that any bleed is hidden in its own shade. Spray in short bursts, in several thin coats, at right angles to the edge rather than at a shallow angle.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Skyhawk in 1:72 scale who want a clean transition between shades
  • Those who would rather avoid masking small areas with tape
  • Builders after a repeatable result across several models of the range
  • Beginners, for whom a cut-out mask is the quickest way to a crisp line

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, that is an accessory to a plastic kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

The set is cut to the outlines of the A-4M version in 1:72 scale. The older versions of the range have a different shape of canopy and spine, so do not expect universal use.

The lighter one first, let it cure, then the darker one over the mask. Light over dark calls for heavier coats, which flood and smudge the edge of the mask.

Degrease and smooth the base, run a burnisher over the mask once it is stuck down and seal the edge with a thin coat of the color already on the model.
