Stencils for the national insignia and technical markings for the 1:72 A-6 Intruder let the stars and the lettering be sprayed straight into the finish of a model from the Trumpeter, Fujimi, Hasegawa and Italeri kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set serves for spraying the American national insignia and technical markings onto kits of the A-6 Intruder attack aircraft from Trumpeter, Fujimi, Hasegawa and Italeri. The markings thus become part of the finish, not a film laid on top.
A sprayed insignia has no glossy edge of carrier film around its perimeter, does not lift on rivets or on the edges of panels and stands later weathering with no risk of peeling off. On the large areas of the fuselage and the wing the difference is apparent at first glance, especially with the matte gray finishes of the later years of service. You can moreover tone the shade down according to how weathered a surface you want; with a ready-made film there is no such choice.
The Intruder served with the US Navy and the Marine Corps as a carrier of bomb armament for deployment in the dark and in bad weather. Early machines wore a light underside and a gray upper surface with colorful squadron insignia; later they moved to a subdued gray scheme in which the stars and the lettering are deliberately faint. The choice of period therefore decides how the finished build comes across. Lay the position of the markings out according to photographs of real machines; with large insignia on the wing it helps to work from the center toward the edges.
