A set of pre-cut masks, 1:72 Aichi E13A Jake - Japanese national insignia, from Dead Design for spraying the hinomaru instead of using decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit but an accessory for a finished model. The set contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks of the Japanese national insignia, which are called the hinomaru. The insignia is sprayed with paint through the mask directly onto the surface of the model, so no decal carrier film is left on it. The Aichi E13A, listed by the Allies under the code name Jake, was a three-seat reconnaissance floatplane of the Imperial Japanese Navy that took off from the catapults of cruisers and battleships.
Why spray the insignia through a mask
A sprayed insignia is part of the paint layer. It has no glossy edge, does not silver and forms no step that would have to be tapped down with a softener. A gloss varnish under a decal falls away too, so a matte finish stays matte. On floatplanes it shows most, because a decal breaks easily on large curved areas and on the floats.
Let the base coat cure thoroughly, otherwise the mask will bite into the paint when it is lifted. Place the mask according to the color scheme drawing, press the edges down all the way around and smooth the transition with a toothpick. Spray the paint in several thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it does not creep under. Lift the mask off while the paint is still fresh, pulling at a low angle to the surface.
