About product

Masking set for the Albatros D.V in 1:72 scale from the brand Eduard

Do not mistake it for something else: this is neither an aircraft kit nor a photo-etched set but a set of self-adhesive masks. The contents are pre-shaped templates cut from yellow kabuki tape, which are stuck onto the areas that are to stay unpainted while spraying. They are made by the Czech manufacturer Eduard. Masking sets of this kind usually cover the glazing and the tires of the wheels; on First World War biplanes they find use above all on the wheels and on the windscreen. Before buying, check that the set matches the kit you are building.

What the masks are for

Kabuki tape is thin, adapts well to curved shapes and leaves no adhesive behind or tears dried paint when it comes off. Compared with tape cut by hand, masks save not only time but above all risk: the shape is cut by machine, so the edge is straight and fits exactly. The result is a sharp transition with no paint creeping under, which in the small 1:72 scale decides the overall impression of a build, because any inaccuracy is immediately visible on a small area.

Usage tips

Lift the masks off with a sharp scalpel or tweezers and touch them with your fingers as little as possible, so that the adhesive layer does not lose its effect. Press an applied mask down carefully around its whole perimeter, best with a wooden toothpick, so that paint does not creep under the edge. Spray the paint in several thin coats; a single heavy coat creeps under far more easily. Take the mask off while the paint has only flashed off, not once it has fully cured, and pull it back over itself at an angle rather than straight up. Adhesive residue can occasionally be removed with cotton and a little alcohol, but always try that in a hidden place first.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building a First World War biplane in 1:72 scale
  • Those who want to save time spent cutting masks by hand
  • Beginners who struggle to get a straight masking edge
  • Modelers spraying with an airbrush, where the quality of the mask is decisive

The set contains masks only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a set of masking templates used while painting a finished kit. The model itself is not in the package.

Masking sets of this kind usually cover the glazing and the tires; on First World War biplanes they find use above all on the wheels and on the windscreen.

Masks are cut for a particular kit. Before buying, therefore, check that the set matches the model you are building.

Best while the paint has only flashed off, pulling it back over itself at an angle rather than straight up. That reduces the risk of the paint coming away too.
