About product

An-26 photo-etched cargo ramp in 1:72 scale (Brengun)

This photo-etched set from the Czech maker Brengun makes it possible to show the rear cargo ramp realistically on a model of the Soviet Antonov An-26 turboprop transport aircraft in 1:72 scale. The set is cut for one particular kit, the A-Model one. The model, glue and paints are not part of the package.

What makes the An-26 ramp interesting

The An-26 differs from older transport aircraft in how its rear ramp is arranged. It does not merely fold down as on most machines but can be slid under the fuselage, so cargo can be loaded straight from the bed of a truck or dropped in flight. Structurally it is a fairly complex mechanism with rails, guides and a row of lightening holes in the panels. An injection mold cannot manage that: a plastic ramp tends to be a solid plate with the structure merely suggested. Etched metal, by contrast, makes it possible to show the real cutouts, the thin walking surface and the small rods, so the open rear of a model finally matches the real thing.

Tips for working it

First go through the instructions and lay out the order of the bends: on larger photo-etched assemblies the last bend is often unreachable if it is made earlier than it should be. Anneal the metal briefly over a flame; it softens and forms better. Make the bends in a bending tool, which on long edges is the only way to get a straight line. The original ramp will have to be cut out of the plastic kit and the opening in the fuselage cleaned up. Glue with super glue in short sections and keep checking the right angles. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Soviet and Czech transport subjects in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to build the An-26 with the rear open
  • Experienced builders with experience of larger photo-etched assemblies

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The model, glue, paints and any other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory photo-etched set for an An-26 kit in 1:72 scale that you have already bought. The model itself has to be bought separately.

Rather not. It is a fairly large photo-etched assembly with several bends where the order of the steps has to be kept. We recommend having at least one smaller photo-etched set behind you.

Yes. The original plastic ramp is cut off and the opening in the fuselage cleaned up so that the photo-etched assembly fits. Reckon on a sharp scalpel and a file.

Use a photo-etch bending tool. Bending long edges by hand with tweezers creates a ripple that can no longer be straightened.
