About product

Arado Ar 199 late version painting masks 1:72 (Peewit)

A set of pre-cut painting masks in 1:72 scale for a model of the Arado Ar 199 in its late form. It is not a kit but an accessory, which covers the glazing while spraying and sets off the frames with a crisp edge. The form stated in the name is a distinguishing detail, because a separate set cut to a different glazing shape is made for the early machine. The extent of the set is stated on the box.

The real subject

The Arado Ar 199 was a two-seat training floatplane on a pair of floats, meant for training the crews of water-borne aircraft. The cockpit was well glazed, because both instructor and pupil needed a view while maneuvering near the surface. It was a type built in small numbers, which makes it a collector's item among models rather than a common subject.

Use and tips

The most frequent cause of a spoiled edge is not the mask but the surface under it. Paint runs under a mask everywhere the surface is uneven, dusty or only just tacky. Before sticking the mask down, therefore, wash the part, let it dry completely and remove any fingerprints, because grease kills a mask's adhesion. Lay the mask on with tweezers and press the edge home along its whole length with your fingers or the blunt tip of a toothpick. Instead of one heavy coat spray several thin ones, and begin with a very light overspray of the base shade, which seals the microscopic gap under the edge. Time the removal so that the paint is dry but not overcured. In a fully cured coat the edge springs back and can break away as the mask is pulled off. Pull the mask back at an angle over itself, not straight up.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the late form of the Arado Ar 199 in 1:72 scale
  • Collectors of floatplanes and training machines
  • Builders who want cleanly bounded glazing frames
  • Modelers who want to shorten the finishing work on the cockpit

The package contains masks only. A kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Go by the form of your kit and the shape of its glazing. The set is cut for the late form.

No, these are masks only.

Onto smooth, clean and completely dry paint. It will not hold on tacky paint or on a greasy part, and paint will run under it.
