About product

Flying Fortresses in British colors

When the Royal Air Force took over the American Flying Fortresses, they were given their own designations for the forms there and very unusual work. Most of them did not drop bombs but measured the weather and jammed German radars. Two of the three machines on this sheet belong to the first of those two groups. The aircraft with the fuselage numbers FA696 and FA699 carried the code letters AD together with B and H and the personal names Borganes Bess and Hekla Hettie, that is, a tribute to an Icelandic settlement and to a renowned volcano. They took off from Reykjavik, where in patrolling weather service over the North Atlantic they gathered the data needed for planning raids over Europe. Those were long, tiring and dangerous flights with no hope of a single kill.

The third choice belongs to the later form with the number KJ177, the code BU and the letter E and the inscription Take It Easy. It served with No. 214 Squadron, which loaded its Fortresses with electronics instead of bombs and accompanied night formations as a jammer of enemy radars. Of all three options it is precisely this one that is the most interesting structurally, because the British jammers carried unusual antennas and fairings on the fuselage and under it.

The printing is released with water. With the large code letters it is recommended to work on smoothed gloss paint and to press a finished motif down gently with a dry cloth, so that no air pocket is left under it. Anyone who wants to have the machine faithful down to the detail should think out in advance how to resolve the glazing and the fairings on the underside of the fuselage, because that is precisely where the British examples differed most from the American ones.

FAQ

Three. Two machines of the earlier form and one of the later one.

Above all for weather reconnaissance and for jamming enemy radars, not for area bombing.

From Reykjavik in Iceland, out over the North Atlantic.

Yes. The jamming aircraft carried additional antennas and fairings that an ordinary kit does not have.
