The version known as the Friedrich is usually called the aerodynamic peak of the 109's development. The designers rounded off the wingtips, got rid of the tailplane struts, retracted the tailwheel and redrew the cowling around the engine into a smoother line. The armament moved onto the centerline of the machine, which improved agility, even if some pilots regretted the lower weight of fire. The best-known German fighter pilots flew this type on both main fronts in 1941 and 1942, and a good number of them considered it the most pleasant machine they ever handled.
The glazing of the Friedrich consists of three sections and each has a different division of frames. That is exactly why the hand-taping method so often goes wrong: the panels are tiny and a deviation of half a millimeter is enough to make a frame look crooked. Apply the segments one at a time, start with the section that will be most visible, and press the edges down with a blunt tip. After spraying let the paint only become tacky rather than fully cure, and lift the film slowly at a sharp angle. If a slight overlap appears under the edge, it can be scraped away with the tip of a toothpick without damaging the surface.
The kit is not part of the package; this is an accessory for the painting stage.
