About product

Boulton Paul Defiant 1:72 - turned pitot tube and .303 barrels (MASTER)

This is not an aircraft kit but a small set of metal accessories by the Polish manufacturer MASTER. It contains a turned pitot tube and the barrels of the Browning .303 inch aircraft machine guns for a model of the Boulton Paul Defiant in 1:72 scale. The base plastic kit has to be obtained separately.

What metal adds over plastic

Injection-molded plastic handles these parts with a compromise. The gun muzzles are blind and would have to be drilled out by hand, the pitot tube tends to be thicker than the scale calls for, and it breaks off easily while a finished model is handled. A turned brass part has its bore from the factory, is straight and true along its whole length, and the toughness of the metal stands up even to a careless placing of the model in a display case.

Installation and painting tips

Cut the plastic part off as close to the surface as possible, level the area and drill the hole with a micro drill of the diameter of the pin on the metal part. Set the metal in with super glue, or with a slower-setting epoxy that gives time to align it. Degrease the parts with alcohol before painting, because grease from your fingers is the main reason paint holds poorly on brass. A thin coat of primer intended for metal works best. Instead of painting, the gun muzzles can simply be polished and darkened with a bluing solution, which makes the metal sheen look more faithful. Glue the pitot tube on at the very end of the build.

Who the set is for

  • For modelers who build the Defiant in 1:72 and want to remove the typical weaknesses of the plastic parts
  • For those who add photo-etched sets to a model and are looking for matching metal parts
  • For builders of display and competition models, where small details are judged
  • For less experienced modelers too - a micro drill and super glue are enough to fit them

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a set of metal accessories for a model of the Boulton Paul Defiant in 1:72 scale. The base plastic kit has to be bought separately.

No. Turned barrels have their bore from the factory, which is the main reason metal parts are bought. You will only drill the hole in the plastic into which the metal part is seated.

First degrease the parts with alcohol, then apply a thin primer for metal. On the gun muzzles the option without paint works well too, that is, just polishing and darkening with a bluing solution.

At the very end of the build, after painting and decals. A protruding part is otherwise in the way every time the model is handled.
