About product

British headquarters, the Second World War – figures 1:72 (Zvezda)

A set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale depicting the members of a British command post of the Second World War period. It is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft but an accessory for a diorama or a gaming table: figures give a scene scale, action and the human dimension that equipment on its own never has. Zvezda is a Russian manufacturer and this size of figure is among the most widespread standards, so you can easily combine the set with figures and equipment of other brands.

The real subject

Command posts were the organizational hub of every unit. They brought together map material, means of communication and the officers who evaluated reports and passed orders on to subordinate formations. British command groups in the Second World War worked both in permanent buildings and in field conditions, often under a camouflage net or in an improvised shelter. Scenes of exactly that kind are a rewarding subject for modelers, because they add a comprehensible story to otherwise static equipment.

Building and painting tips

Cut the figures carefully from the sprue with a sharp knife and clean the mold seam up; with small figures a fine file pays off rather than abrasive paper. Before painting, wash the whole set in lukewarm water with detergent, so that no mold release agent stays on the surface. Paint over a thin primer and work from the dark coats toward the light ones: the base tone of the uniform, then a lightened dry brush on the edges and a dark wash into the folds. The faces and the hands are done last. Finally unify the surface with matte varnish and glue the figures onto the base of the diorama.

FAQ

The number of figures is stated on the box of the set.

They are not. They are supplied in the color of the plastic on the sprue and they need cleaning up, painting and possibly gluing onto a base.

The 1:72 scale is among the most common standards, so combining them is usually no problem. Small differences in the height of the figures between manufacturers do occur, though.

Acrylic modeling paints applied with a brush. A thin primer, a wash into the folds and matte varnish at the end all pay off.
