About product

British QF 2-pdr Mk.IX gun and Besa machine gun tips - 1:72 (MASTER)

This metal set for British armor in 1:72 scale holds a turned barrel of the 40 mm QF 2-pdr gun in the Mk.IX version with a smooth barrel, and with it the tips of the Besa machine guns. These are replacement parts, not a vehicle model. The benefit lies mainly in two things: the barrel has a real bore and is perfectly straight, so once fitted there is none of the typical bent plastic gun, and the machine gun tip beside the main gun holds the correct position in relation to the barrel while being glued.

The real subject

The 40 mm Ordnance QF 2-pounder was the standard British tank and anti-tank gun of the late 1930s and early 1940s. A whole range of British cruiser and infantry tanks and armored cars carried it. The individual marks of the barrel differ in profile, and the Mk.IX version has a smooth cylindrical shape without a step. The Besa was a British licensed machine gun derived from a Czechoslovak design, mounted coaxially beside the main weapon on tanks.

Fitting and painting tips

First check on the kit which mark of barrel your subject carried, because the difference between a smooth and a stepped barrel is clearly visible on a model. Cut the plastic barrel off at the turret mantlet, drill the hole on the same axis and fit the metal part dry, and only then glue it. On the machine gun tip the alignment with the hole in the mantlet is the key, otherwise the whole weapon looks crooked. Bond the metal with super glue, degrease it before painting and use a primer for metal. Keep the color of the barrel close in shade to the hull, with only a darker muzzle and a light metal rub.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British armor in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who dislike a bent or blind plastic barrel
  • those who want to get the right mark of the gun barrel
  • modelers who combine metal with photo-etched sets

This is an accessory for modelers, not a stand-alone kit. The basic model, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Mk.IX has a smooth cylindrical barrel without a step. Other marks show a change of diameter in the profile, so it is worth checking what your particular subject carried before buying.

The product designation says Besa machine gun tips, that is the end sections of the barrel, not the whole weapon. The rest of the machine gun stays from the plastic kit.

No, these are metal replacement parts for a model. The basic kit has to be bought separately.

Drill the hole in the mantlet on the same axis and fit the part dry first. Stand the model on a flat surface and check the position head on, and only then apply the glue.
