An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from UM. The subject is the BT-7M, the final production version of the Soviet BT series of fast tanks. The 1:72 scale is popular with modelers who build larger collections or dioramas and do not want to give up a whole display case to a single machine. The exact make-up of the sprues, the number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are given on the packaging.
The BT series was created in the 1930s as a fast wheel-cum-track tank built on a Christie-type suspension: large road wheels, springing inside the hull and the ability to run on tracks or, once the tracks were removed, directly on the wheels. The BT-7M differed from the earlier machines of the series above all in its power plant, as it received the V-2 diesel engine, a concept that was later used in Soviet medium tanks as well. The main armament was a 45 mm gun in a turret with conical walls, supplemented by a machine gun. Machines of the BT series were in service at the start of the fighting on the Eastern Front.
In a small scale the running gear decides the result: glue the wheels on a flat surface so that they all sit in one plane, otherwise the model stands crooked and the error shows at first glance. Cut small parts such as the fenders and the tools on the hull off with a sharp scalpel, and rather just polish the gate marks than sand them into the surface. Use thin cement for plastic applied with a brush so that it does not run across the surface. Before painting, lay down a primer, spray the base shade with an airbrush and bring out the relief with a dark wash in the recesses and a lighter dry brush on the edges. Suggest dust and dried mud with pigments, most heavily around the tracks, wheels and fenders.
