Masks for the glazing of the Australian CAC Wirraway aircraft in the CA-3 and CA-5 forms, 1:72 scale. Prepared for the Special Hobby kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Wirraway was built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation from the license documents of the American NA-16 family, out of which the well-known Harvard trainer also grew. The Australians wanted an aircraft that would handle training, reconnaissance and light attack, and that is why it received machine guns and racks for small bombs. The CA-3 and CA-5 series were among the first deliveries. When the war reached Rabaul and New Guinea in 1942, these slow machines had to go up against Japanese aviation. One of them is credited at the end of that same year with shooting down a Japanese fighter, an exceptional result for a type of this purpose.
The package holds self-adhesive film die-cut to the shape of the frames of the long two-seat cockpit, including the windscreen and the rear fields of the canopy. The patterns copy the plastic parts of the model by Special Hobby in 1:72 scale.
Before you start, lay the parts on a light surface so that their outlines are visible. Carry the film on the tip of the tweezers, seat it dry and only then press it down. On the long cockpit it pays to work from the tail toward the nose and to keep checking whether the frames are staying parallel. Apply the finish in several mist coats, as a thick coat peels away when it is removed. Take the masks off within a few hours of spraying.
The set is meant to go with a kit, it does not make a model on its own. It does not include clear parts, paints or decals, only the masks themselves. Anyone building Australian equipment from the period of the Second World War saves the most tedious part of painting the cockpit with it.
