Chinese heavy cavalry of the 16th to 17th century, 1:72 is a set of mounted Red Box figures with the highest share of metal areas in the whole line.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box, the heaviest step of a trio of cavalry that the maker divides by degree of protection. For a modeler it is at the same time the most demanding set of the line to paint: the higher the share of protected areas, the greater the part of the figure that falls to metal, and that is handled at a small scale differently from cloth or leather.
Fully protected mounted detachments in the territory of China in the period of the 16th to the 17th century. Heavy cavalry differed from the lighter categories by the extent of the protection of the rider and in some formations of the horse as well; with higher protection the mobility fell and the demand on the space a formation needed rose.
Extensive metal areas are treacherous in 1:72, because they quickly merge into one glossy patch without shape. Lead the base dark, then, black or a very dark brown, and build the metal up on it in layers, with a gradual accenting of the edges and the highest points. An alternative to paint is a careful polishing of the edges with a soft pencil or with a metallic pigment; at a small scale it gives a finer reflection than a full opaque layer. A flowing dark layer into the gaps is definitely worth applying, otherwise the armor will lose its articulation. For a scene it holds that heavy cavalry is the optically heaviest element you will build at this scale; it works as the center of gravity of a composition, to which the lighter sets and the infantry line up. Do not put it in the middle of the base but off the axis; the group then holds the eye and the rest of the scene around it has somewhere to continue.
The figures are supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
