This photo-etched set from the Czech maker Brengun does not deal with one particular aircraft. It holds recurring structural details: the fittings and fasteners that close engine covers, and the stiffening features that are visible on the inner side of open covers and doors. It is an accessory to the model you are building, not the model itself.
Quick-release cowling fasteners are among the details that catch the eye at once on a real machine, but on a plastic part all that is left of them is a shallow recess, or nothing at all. It is the same with the ribs: as soon as you open the engine cover, a gun bay or an access door on a model, the inner side shows, and kit manufacturers leave it smooth. That is exactly where etched sheet pays off most: it is thin enough to look true and strong enough to be bent into shape. Because the features are generic, you will use them gradually across several builds, types and periods.
Cut the parts off with a scalpel against a hard surface and sort them straight away so that the small fittings are not lost. The ribs are often bent to a right angle; use a bending tool or the edge of a razor blade and tighten the fold gradually. When the sheet springs back, anneal it briefly over a flame and let it cool. Before gluing, check that the area on the model is smooth and degreased; apply super glue with a pin, not from the tube. Start painting with a primer, otherwise paint does not hold on metal. The fasteners look best when, after painting, you run a dry brush with metal paint lightly over them: they then stand out from the surface without your having to paint each one.
The set is supplied unpainted and serves to complete a model. Glue, paints and the kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
