The set brings figures of cows for dioramas of a rural setting. Animals work surprisingly strongly in such a scene: they reveal at once that the action takes place in the country and at the same time give the scene a calm that contrasts with military hardware. They can also be used away from war themes, for instance on a model railway in a close scale.
Period photographs from field tracks are full of farm animals that carried on living their own way, whatever was going on around them. It is exactly that kind of detail that turns a model into a narrative. One figure by a fence or a pair at a watering trough is enough and the viewer will fill the rest of the story in. Farm animals also forgive small inaccuracies in painting, so they are a good place to try out procedures you will then apply to human faces.
Start from a light base tone and add the markings on top of it, not the other way round. Blend the transitions between the patches with a damp brush so that they are not sharp. A wet muzzle will benefit from a drop of gloss varnish; the hooves and horns, by contrast, should be treated matte and somewhat darker. A final light dusting of the lower parts ties the animal to the terrain.
