The McDonnell F-4B was the original carrier version of the Phantom for the US Navy and the Marine Corps. It had no gun of its own, it relied on radar and guided missiles, and its pair of J79 engines left behind the famous smoke trail. When the machines were nearing the end of their service at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, some of them went through a comprehensive rebuild program, after which they received a new fire-control system and the F-4N designation. The improved examples then flew with reserve squadrons until the 1980s.
The Phantom has a conspicuously intricate canopy made up of a fixed windscreen and two hinged sections over both seats. There are many frames and in a small scale they are thin, which makes tracing by hand a tedious and thankless job in which the line easily wanders as well.
The package therefore contains shapes for the outer as well as the inner side. The inner ones are applied before the cockpit is closed and sprayed in the interior shade; the outer ones come up together with the camouflage.
It is recommended to lay out the whole build in advance. Once the cockpit is glued together you can no longer reach the inner side, and the only solution would be to take the finished model apart. So divide the small pieces into two piles and work through the inner one first, before you start on the fuselage. Anyone building a Phantom for the first time should start with the rear hinged section. It is the largest of all the pieces, it forgives a less precise placement, and on it you can try out how the material behaves before the smallest shapes come up.
