The F/A-18E Super Hornet is an American carrier-based multirole aircraft, a larger and newer development of the F/A-18 Hornet. It operates from the decks of aircraft carriers and performs both fighter and attack tasks. Shipboard service leaves its mark on the machine: it has a multitude of external stores, access covers and service markings, and that is exactly where a model calls for finer parts than injection-molded plastic can deliver.
The set is etched from thin metal. Photo-etched parts are used where plastic is at the limit of what it can do: they can capture the true thickness of sheet metal, the fine grilles, loops and narrow strips that in plastic would have to be several times thicker. The individual parts are held in the fret on small tabs, from which they are cut away.
Cut the parts off with a sharp blade on a hard surface and never snap them out; then level off the remains of the tab with a fine file. Run the bends along the etched line, ideally in a bending tool or between the flat jaws of a pair of pliers, and press briefly and evenly along the whole length. They are glued with super glue applied in a minute amount, which is best carried on the tip of a wire rather than straight from the bottle. Degrease the metal before painting and use primer, otherwise the paint will flake off the smooth surface at the first touch. Dry fit every part beforehand and follow the set manufacturer's instructions.
The set belongs in the hands of modelers who already have some experience of building and who work with tweezers and a sharp blade. In 1:72 scale every tenth of a millimeter shows, so fine metal parts make a marked difference to the result.
