In 2016 the Royal Australian Air Force recalled the hundred-year existence of its oldest squadron, and for the occasion one of the two-seat Super Hornets received a commemorative coat. The machine with the construction number A44-210 thus carried a reference to the history of a unit reaching back to the beginnings of military flying in the southern hemisphere.
The twin-engined carrier-borne fighter-bomber has two vertical surfaces set at a slant, and it is exactly these that tend to be the main carrier of the decoration with jubilee treatments. The slant means that the motif has to be printed distorted so that it looks right when seen from the side, and that the left and the right piece cannot be swapped. The other surfaces stay in graduated gray, on which the commemorative colors stand out.
The second particular is the size of the machine. A carrier-borne fighter-bomber has extensive surfaces on which small lettering is lost, whereas a large jubilee field looks proportionate. When laying the work out, therefore, settle the main motif first and complete the rest according to it, so that the result does not look overloaded.
A slanted surface tempts the print to slide down it while it is wet. It helps to lay the model on its side and let the piece settle horizontally, and only then to return it to the vertical position. Around the trailing edges of both surfaces runs the boundary of the moving parts, where it is better to divide the artwork with a scalpel beforehand, so that it does not crack uncontrollably later. The last phase is unifying the sheen, because commemorative artwork tends to be more matte than the operational finish around it.
