This set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks is intended for the model of the carrier-borne FH-1 Phantom jet aircraft in 1:72 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft or a part of one, but an aid for painting: the masks are stuck onto the glazing and other areas that are to stay clean, and after spraying they are taken off.
The FH-1 was the first American jet aircraft to serve from the deck of an aircraft carrier. Its cockpit has a small canopy with several frames and a separate windshield at the front, a combination that is miserable to follow by hand with masking tape. The frames are narrow and in 1:72 scale half a millimeter of inaccuracy is enough to show. The second reason is the finish: aircraft of this generation are often depicted in a smooth metal or single-color gloss scheme, and such a coat shows up mercilessly every run of paint on the glass and every stray fiber from frayed tape.
First wash the glazing and let it dry completely; grease from your fingers holds a mask worse than smooth varnish. Peel the mask out with pointed tweezers, lay it down and press it gently with a toothpick, above all around its edge, so paint does not run under the rim. Spray thinly and in several coats, because a heavy layer creeps under an edge more easily than a thin one. Take the mask off while the paint is freshly dry, not after several days, when it already peels off together with the varnish. If you are masking for two different colors as well, it is advisable to allow enough time between coats for the paint to flash off.
The set contains only the masks. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
