A set of plastic figures of Napoleonic heavy cavalry in 1:72 scale from the Russian brand Zvezda, released in 2010. It holds nineteen riders and nineteen horses, the riders in eight poses and the horses in four, so a whole squadron including a standard-bearer with the standard comes out of a single package. The riders are one-piece and free of flash, so assembly comes down to seating the figure in the saddle. The box dates the set to 1812.
The cuirassiers were the heaviest cavalry of the French army and served as the weapon of the decisive blow. A rider wore a steel cuirass of a front and a back plate and a helmet with a crest and a horsehair mane, fought with a long straight sword and was committed in closed formations against shaken infantry. The cuirass protected against a cut and against a spent ball at longer range, but not at close quarters. The Russian campaign of 1812 was a test for this kind of cavalry: the great charges at Borodino showed its strength, while the later losses of horses showed how expensive such a unit was to keep up.
Most of the work is on the horses, so divide them into two or three coat shades and paint them in layers: the base, a dark wash into the folds and a lighter pass with a dry brush. The steel cuirass and the helmet come out well when the metallic paint is applied over a smooth gloss base and a darker wash is added. Bring out the dark blue coats and the white breeches gently, and paint the small distinctions last with a fine brush. Glue the rider into the saddle with cyanoacrylate glue, as the joint is small and under load.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
