A set of historical figures capturing French naval ratings in the period of the Boxer Uprising. The 1:72 scale is the most common figure scale for large scenes: a whole group can be set up in a small area without the diorama outgrowing a display case.
Naval ratings ashore: a tunic with a collar, a cap, lighter field equipment and a hand firearm. In a scene the set behaves differently from an infantry set, as it does not hold a continuous line but forms smaller groupings around a particular task, for example at a barricade, a gate or in handling cargo.
On a figure over two centimeters tall it is shadow that creates volume, not drawing. The most effective tool is a wash, that is a heavily thinned dark paint that runs into the folds of the cloth, under the belt and under the edge of the cap. Two things are crucial. First the thinning: a wash should be so thin that at the touch of the brush it runs into a recess by itself; a thick wash stays standing on the surface and makes a dirty patch. Second the base: a dried base color belongs under a wash, ideally a slightly smooth one, otherwise the liquid will spread over the whole area. Draw the excess off with a dry brush at once, while it is still damp. If the parts are flexible, count on a wash drying more slowly on soft plastic.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
