About product

Heinkel He 60, part 2, decals 1:72, Print Scale

A sheet set of water-slide decals in 1:72 scale from Print Scale. The sheet is devoted to the Heinkel He 60 float reconnaissance biplane and it is the second part of this series. It is not a model and not a kit: the decals go onto an already built and painted model. For a type as unusual as the He 60, sheets like this are practically the only way to build a model in a form other than the one the maker of the kit supplied.

The real subject

The Heinkel He 60 was a German two-seat float biplane of the first half of the 1930s intended for maritime reconnaissance. The design followed what was then the usual solution: mixed construction with a metal frame and fabric covering, two large floats under the fuselage and open cockpits for the pilot and the observer. The aircraft was designed so that it could be launched by catapult from the deck of a warship and lifted back aboard by crane after landing on the water. At the beginning of its service it carried out maritime reconnaissance for large surface units, and later, because its performance was not good enough, it was gradually replaced by more modern types and moved to training and coastal units.

Use and tips

A biplane with floats has a busy surface and many struts, so apply the decals before the final fitting of the small parts, while access to the surfaces is still good. Overcoat the model with a gloss varnish, cut the motif out close to the edge of the printing and dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds. Once it has rested, slide it onto the moistened surface, set it with a soft brush and blot the water with a towel. On fabric covering with the structure of the ribs suggested, a decal softener is practically essential, otherwise the film bridges the hollows and lifts away. Once completely dry, even the surface out with a matte varnish, because fabric surfaces tended to be matte to semi-matte.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of interwar aircraft and float types in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in naval aviation of the 1930s
  • Modelers who want markings beyond the contents of a kit
  • Collectors of decal sheets for less usual types

The package contains decals only. The model, the paints and the varnish are not included.

FAQ

It is not. It is only a sheet of decals, and you build the model from your own kit in 1:72 scale.

It was a float reconnaissance biplane for the navy, launched by catapult from the deck of a ship and lifted back aboard by crane after landing on the water.

The manufacturer releases several sheets in sequence for the same type, so as to cover a wider choice of forms. The contents of the individual parts do not overlap.

Use a decal softener. Without it the film bridges the hollows between the ribs, and once dry it lifts in those places and forms silvery bubbles.
