About product

Hotchkiss H35 with the SA38 gun, command form, 1:72 scale

A kit of the French Hotchkiss H35 light tank in the variant armed with the 37 mm SA38 gun and adapted as a command vehicle. The 1:72 scale suits dioramas and collections where space is short, and the First to Fight brand concentrates on machines of the late 1930s and the beginning of the Second World War. Check the contents of the package, the number of parts and whether decals are included against the listing on the box.

The real subject

The Hotchkiss H35 was a French light tank of the mid-1930s, originally intended for cavalry units. It had a cast hull and turret, a crew of two and was decently armored for its size. Its weak point was the original armament, a short 37 mm gun with a low muzzle velocity that was not enough against the armored vehicles of the day. That is why a longer 37 mm SA38 gun with markedly better penetration appeared on the later vehicles and on some of the older machines. The second limitation was the crew of two, with the commander both loading and firing. Command vehicles differed from the ordinary ones mainly in added radio equipment, which allowed a commander to direct a unit on the move, and that is also why they are built and collected separately.

Building and painting tips

The cast hull and turret have softer shapes than welded structures, which can be emphasized with very fine surface texturing before spraying. Finish and paint the tracks and the running gear before you close up the sides. French schemes of 1940 tend to be multicolored with wavy fields and often with a dark border around the transitions. In 1:72 scale it is best to paint the transitions with a brush or to spray at very low pressure, otherwise the fields bleed into one another. Keep the weathering restrained and concentrate it on the lower hull and on the tracks.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of French machines of the late 1930s
  • Modelers who build armored vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in command variants and differences in armament
  • Builders of dioramas from the 1940 campaign

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is longer and has a higher muzzle velocity, so it penetrates armor markedly better. The original short 37 mm gun was weak against the armored vehicles of the day.

Above all the added radio equipment, which lets the commander direct the vehicles under him on the move. The external differences tend to be small.

Two. The commander also operated the gun, which was a considerable limitation in combat and is one of the most frequently mentioned shortcomings of the real vehicle.

The model is small and has a reasonable number of parts, so it suits less experienced modelers too. The color scheme is more demanding than the build itself.
