1:72 Huns — figures from the manufacturer HäT

The set is devoted to the Huns, the nomad warriors of late antiquity. The figures are of plastic and are supplied unpainted. In 1:72 scale they can be used both for tabletop games, where whole units are built, and for dioramas from the period of the migrations — a combination of mounted archers and foot warriors gives a scene movement and makes it possible to work with a looser formation than with regular armies.

The real subject

The Huns were a nomad people who in the course of the 4th and 5th centuries moved into the area of central and eastern Europe and significantly influenced the fate of the late Roman Empire. Their military strength rested on cavalry and on the composite recurve bow, with which they could shoot from horseback on the move. Their equipment was varied and often put together from booty or trade — leather and cloth garments, caps, a lasso, a lance and a sword. They reached the peak of their power under Attila in the middle of the 5th century, after which the tribal confederation quickly fell apart.

Building and painting tips

First wash the figures in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry. Trim the parting seams with a scalpel. After the primer coat, proceed from the large areas to the details; with nomad peoples it pays to reach for earthy and muted tones with a few more pronounced accents, so that a unit does not look uniform. Bring out the hollows with a wash and lighten the edges. On mounted figures paint the horse and the rider separately and join them only at the end.
