An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Japanese maker Aoshima. The model depicts the Type 96 wheeled armored personnel carrier in version B. Aoshima releases versions A and B as separate kits, so when choosing it is necessary to watch the letter in the name.
The Type 96 is an eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier taken into service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in the second half of the 1990s. The vehicle serves to carry a squad under armor protection, has all-wheel drive and is built for rapid moves on the road as well as off it. The hull is angular, with vertical sides and a rear ramp; the driver and the commander sit at the front and there is a mount on the roof for a crew-served weapon. The vehicle is structurally simple and easy to maintain, which is crucial for equipment intended for large numbers and rapid deployment.
Build the eight-wheeled chassis on a flat surface and check that all eight wheels sit down, because twisting shows most on a wheeled vehicle. Spray the wheels separately from the hull and shade the tires into dark gray, as pure black looks flat. Lay the base coat over primer; Japanese vehicles carry two-color camouflage with soft transitions, which is better done at a small scale with an airbrush at low pressure. Bring out the engraved lines with a thinned wash and use fine dust pigment on the fenders and the lower hull. Watch out for the thin weapon mounts and the grab handles, which are fragile at this scale, so glue them last.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
