The Kawasaki Ki-100 in 1:72 scale: masks for spraying that create the impression of a real deflection on the control surfaces and ailerons.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set serves to keep the ailerons, the elevator and the rudder on a finished model from coming across as one uniform surface. The deflection is not cut out but painted: part of the surface stays under covering in the lighter base, the exposed strip is sprayed more deeply and the division at the edge imitates the shadow a really deflected surface casts. Intended for the small 1:72 scale.
The Kawasaki Ki-100 came about out of necessity. The Ha-140 V engines were missing for the part-built fuselages of the Ki-61 Hien fighter, so the designers fitted a Ha-112-II radial into them. The conversion turned out beyond expectations: the aircraft kept its pleasant flying characteristics, gained a more reliable powerplant and at the altitudes where American bombers operated it behaved better than its predecessor. It reached the fighting only in 1945 and never decided anything in numbers, but among connoisseurs of Japanese aviation it has the reputation of one of the most successful designs of its day.
The effect stands out on a smooth and well dried base. Seat the covering according to the engraved lines of the airframe, smooth the edges carefully and spray square to the surface in light coats, so that paint does not run under an edge. Choose the darker shade only a degree deeper than the base camouflage; an exaggerated contrast comes across as cartoon-like. Take it off slowly, while the coat has freshly set.
